Bad Habit Retro Love Palette

Purchased By Me
If you follow me on Instagram, you know that way back when I purchased the Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette and quickly sent it back. Thankfully the company refunded me with no issues. I’m sure by now you all know the story. Lots of people received beautiful palettes. Some of us didn’t. My brush lightly (and I do mean lightly, I didn’t dig my brush into the pan like many have implied) touched a few shadows and they quickly turned to dust. Obviously none of it stuck to my lids. It was a nightmare. I had this beautiful palette sitting in front of me and I couldn’t even use it. After I had returned it I was tempted to try and track down a better version. But after reading more reviews about the ‘better’ palettes still having some issues, I decided to just let it go.
Then last week I stumbled upon this palette on Instagram. Could a $10.00 ‘dupe’ really compare to the infamous Subculture palette? It surprises me to say that it does! The Subculture Palette swatched so much nicer than the Retro Love Palette. Subculture was also much more pigmented. But you know what? Retro Love actually performed better. Well, for me anyway. I did have to build up a lot of the shadows to achieve the intensity that I wanted. However, they applied and blended nicely. I was able to create a look that I was extremely happy with. With minimal effort.
So while the real thing didn’t work out for me, I’m happy to have found an alternative. You can see a look I created with the Retro Love Palette below. For this look I used Icon on my lid, Flower Power in my crease, Rock N Roll on my outer lid and outer crease, Free Love on my lower lash line, and Psychedelic on my brow bone. I also threw a little Rebel in there somewhere.
Overall, I’m really happy with my purchase. This was a really nice find. And for just $10.00!

Great review! If you’re interested, makeup artist Kevin James Bennett made a great post on Instagram explaining why the Subculture palette was such a huge fail.

Chris, thank you so much for pointing me toward that explanation! That makes perfect sense to me! It was so frustrating hearing people claim that those of us who had bad experiences just didn’t know what we were doing. I never claimed to be an expert, but I know a defective product when I see it. Either way I’m glad to have at least found a dupe for that palette. It’s a shame because it swatched beautifully!
Total bargain! Love the look you created xx

Yes they are! :)
Bad habit palettes are getting raves online…I also ordered Aphrodite recently and waiting for it… Love the look you created, I heard the subculture story and it was such a shame…Retro love does have some not so pigmented dark shades but they are better than non-blendable pigmented ones like you said…
Yes you’re absolutely right! At least I can build these up and end up with a wearable look. And I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Aphrodite! I just bought Athena and Aura. I can’t wait to try them out.
