Swatch

When I first saw swatches of the Black Moon Cosmetics Liquid to Matte Lipsticks I was so excited! I know the very last thing I need is even more liquid lipsticks, but I was sure I needed these. I actually wanted to get both Libra and Purgatory, but Libra was sold out. I had planned on getting it once it came back in stock, but I think I’m going to pass now. I’ll explain.

Purgatory is described as a dark elegant purple. I was seriously expecting it to look just like the swatches I’ve seen floating around Instagram, but that didn’t happen. In some lighting Purgatory looks black with hints of purple. In natural light and flash it actually looks purple, but not quite the shade I was expecting. Don’t get me wrong, it’s pretty. But it’s just not what I was expecting. Unfortunately the negatives don’t stop here.

Application was a bit of a hassle. In the description it says no lip liner needed, but I had to use a lip brush to apply it because of the texture. It wasn’t creamy at all. It was very thick and sort of pasty. Even using the lip brush I found that it applied unevenly leaving me with a very patchy look. Once applied it felt ok. Tacky, but ok.

I don’t like posting bad reviews. If you look back on my posts I might have a meh attitude toward a few things, but I generally don’t waste my time photographing and writing about something that just didn’t work for me. My blog has never been about reviews. I’m not trying to get people to buy things. I like posting about the things I like. The things I find pretty. The things that work for ME. If it helps someone in the process that’s cool. It’s just a hobby for me. Nothing more. That’s why you’ll only hear about me gushing over the pretty stuff n thangs. If something doesn’t work for me I either send it back or give it away. This is definitely something I’d send back if I could. I could probably get over the shade issue because it’s still a very pretty shade. But the formula is horrible in my opinion. I’d seriously like to know how some of those Instagramers ended up with such a polished look. I don’t mind working with a product. But it took me several minutes just to get it looking decent and it never fully evened out. I don’t know. Maybe I got a bad batch? I think if it had a creamier texture and applied evenly it would be damn near perfect. But instead I’m left with something I can’t even use or send back. And that makes me sad. You can see Purgatory in action below.

See what I mean about the patchiness? For the life of me I couldn’t even it out! It was very frustrating. Look at the swatches on their website! What I got was NOTHING close to that. If you can recommend a similar shade please do. I really do need it in my life. I’m going to go sulk now.

Oh! Remember my BH Cosmetics Missy Lynn Palette post? You can finally see that beauty in action (points up). I love it! I initially thought the purple shade wasn’t what I was expecting, but once applied on the lids over primer and a nice white base it’s perfection! I’m so glad I picked it up! I can’t say enough good things about it.

  1. Agree, the swatches on the website look different, but I have to say if you wouldn’t call it “patchiness”, but “ombre”, I would totally have believed you that you did it on purpose.

    • Ombre isn’t a bad look and I could totally get with that. IF it was the look I was going for. *sigh* I still see a butt load of patchiness though. :(

  2. It’s such a shame that you aren’t happy with this product, I hate when that happens! xx

  3. I’m with you and just can’t get these darker shades to work – the review started off so promising! I never really post about things I dislike it either – life is too short to waste on a crap lipstick, am I riiiight??!

  4. I really like that shade! I’m trying to think of something similar… Nars Train Bleu, maybe?

    • Oh I’ll have to look up swatches. You did remind me though, I’ve been meaning to add some Nars lippies to my collection. Hmm…

  5. Oh, too bad I think the color is really pretty – although very different from what they show on their website! And that tube is gorgeous, it’s very similar to Giorgio Armani new lacquer. But a bad liquid lipstick is the worst thing, it’s impossible to make it look right!

    • It really is a gorgeous shade (even if it wasn’t what I was expecting). But I can’t get it to even out. It’s so frustrating! And the packaging really is pretty. I also really dig the names.

  6. Oh dear, it does look patchy on you but nevertheless, the shade is really pretty but it’s pointless if you can’t get it to apply properly. Is there a reason why you can’t return it or is it in their policy?

    • It really is pretty and that’s what’s so frustrating. Their policy is really weird. It states that they are confident that we will love it, but if we don’t we should contact them. However, if we use it at all we can’t return it? And I’d have to pay to ship it back and I won’t get refunded the shipping from the first time around. :(

  7. OH, bummer .. I’d totally write to the company and let them know the lack of product performance. Your color looks nothing like the photo’s on their web site. I really like the deep dark purple lip shade (it’s not for me), but I like the uniqueness of the color.

    • It really doesn’t! I knew I couldn’t have been the only one to see that. I’m not seeing any other reviews floating around either so I can’t compare. But yes the deep purple is just too pretty! I need a good one.

  8. Ohh so sorry that you didn’t like the formula of this! The color looks pretty, but I can see that it looks a bit patchy too. Such a shame!

  9. Oh no, that really sucks about the formula because the shade looks like it has so much potential and I like the packaging as well. It still looks pretty on you but I see what you mean about the application. And that return policy is so bizarre….
Kimmy recently posted…Personal Update and New ScheduleMy Profile

    • Isn’t it? Like we can return it if we don’t like it, but it has to be unused? How the heck would we know if we like it unless we’ve tried it? But there is potential. I just think it’s a big miss for me.

  10. Love the eye look, but I getcha. This was more or less my experience with liquid lipsticks for awhile, too. You probably got a bad batch like I did. =( At least you have lots of other formulas you like! It’s still a very pretty shade with you. =)

    • Thank you, Zovesta! That’s true. I do have others with a formula I love, but I really love this shade. I’m still looking for something to replace it. :(

      • If it’s the shade you like, I believe Kate Moss Rimmel London 04 is a near exact dupe for it, but it’s discontinued now. MAC Cyber and Wet n Wild Vamp It Up are also very similar – you could put one of those on first, then BH Purgatory, and see how that works. =o I’ve done that with some of my patchier liquid lipsticks… lipliner, but better!
