Makeup organization

I want to start off by saying that the house I’m living in now is not my forever home. That being said my makeup station will be revamped in the future. I’ll probably change it up again even before moving because I’m always rearranging and reorganizing things. Anyway, my makeup station started off with one of those cheapy folding tables and an elf gift set basket holding a handful of items.

When I started building my collection I decided it was time for an actual setup. I looked to YouTube for inspiration. I was thisclose to doing the typical Ikea setup (Malm and/or Alex collection items) until I showed my hubby and he decided to have a heart to heart with me. He said ‘Baby, it’s cool, but it’s not you. It’s not like you to follow the crowd. Be YOU!’ Now I’m not sure if he was just trying to get out of the 5+ hour drive to the nearest Ikea or what, but when I finished sulking I started to think. What would I do had I not seen all these typical Ikea setups? All I could see was color. Pink specifically. I guess hubby knows me better than I know myself.

I started off with a regular old desk. I plan to switch it out for something bigger and better later on. I just haven’t come across one that I’m crazy about yet. Anyway, I like to keep the top of my desk clear of clutter. Usually it’s just my computer (yes, I’m STILL rocking that ghetto mouse pad, don’t hate!), magnified/lighted mirror, brushes, a candle, and my coaster with some sort of beverage on top. I store all of my samples in the larger drawer. The smaller drawer holds coupons, those cards that come with my Ipsy bag and Birchbox, back 2 MAC stuffs, etc. On the wall just above my desk you can see various pictures and art work from my wonderful son.

The pink toolbox is where I store all of my makeup. It holds everything perfectly and I love it! But what I love the most is that it’s more ME! Now while I’m not the first person ever to store their makeup collection in a toolbox, I still feel that it’s more personalized and not so cookie-cutter. And with toolboxes you can easily add on as your collection expands. Now that doesn’t mean that I plan to have rows and rows of toolboxes taking over my bedroom. Although hubby had a dream that I had 5 of these bad boys lined up side by side. I told him I’ll never need THAT much room. He laughed.

The Original Pink Box

Each drawer comes with a matching pink rubber grip which holds things in place so there’s no moving around while opening and closing the drawers. I prefer to store my makeup in individual containers for a more organized setup. I purchased these containers at Target for about $4.00-$5.00 each. These containers also have a rubber grip bottom which holds things upright preventing them from sliding around or falling. I would have preferred the clear containers, but those don’t have rubber grip bottoms. And that is the selling point on these. It allows me to see exactly what I have and provides easier access since everything is standing upright. It’s perfect and totally inexpensive.

Room Essentials Drawer Organizer

Below you can see a small collection of photos showing how I store everything in my toolbox. Yes, it’s freakishly organized. Yes, it’s ALWAYS like this. And yes, I probably have a touch of OCD or something. But on a serious note, I just like to be able to find what I need easily and this system works for me.

  1. That is so COOL. I’d never even though about a tool box! And a pink one! So it comes pink like that? Or did you paint it? I’ve only seen primary coloured ones myself.

    • Thank you, Tracy! :) Yes, it already comes pink. I had never seen one before either until I happened to stumble upon a photo of one online. Later on hubby tracked this one down at Sears.

  2. I love it! I’ve seen someone go the tool box route before- it’s so cool! Although it’s not my personal style, I think it’s awesome!

    • Yeah I’ve seen a few similar(ish) setups, too. My BFF also wasn’t crazy about it and insisted I go the Ikea route lol.

  3. Every time I see that pink toolbox, I fall a little more in love with it.

I need to purge some of my nail polishes to make room for makeup. The polishes take up all of one tall Ikea Alex… ideally, I’d like both my polishes *and* makeup to fit.

    • Ya know, it wasn’t so much a love at first sight thing for me. It did take a little getting used to, but I’m really happy I went with the toolbox. Because it really does hold A LOT and it’s super sturdy. Just don’t pull a dippy move like me and open ALL of the drawers at the same time because very bad things will happen lol.

You should totes just get another Alex lol. I thought about giving away some of my polishes since I ran out of room on the rack. I’m probably just going to get another rack though. Just one more…

  4. I love your pink makeup organizer. Where did you find this at I want to get one? I love the way you have all your makeup in one place I have mine in too many places”

    Thanks,
    Misty
