I was so excited when I first saw the e.l.f. Modern Metals Collection. It’s inspired by New Orleans and was co-developed with the winners of Beautyscape. Everything about it stood out to me. The beautiful gold packaging. The shades. The products. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. The collection includes the Modern Metals 10-Piece Eyeshadow Palette, Modern Metals Blush and Highlighter Palette, Modern Metals Liquid Matte Lipstick, and Modern Metals Liquid Gold Lip Gloss. You can purchase this collection as a set at a slightly discounted price or you can purchase each product individually.

Modern Metals 10-Piece Eyeshadow Palette
The Modern Metals 10-Piece Eyeshadow Palette contains 10 eyeshadows. There is a nice assortment of bold and neutral shades in both matte and metallic finishes. The metallic shades are incredibly smooth and pigmented. They glided onto my hand effortlessly. They applied beautifully on the lid both dry and wet. A lot of metallics apply better wet, but I found that these applied beautifully all on their own. Although when applied wet it really does pop. The mattes are ok. The blue and purple shades are what I was most drawn to. Sadly those are the ones that let me down the most. They swatched ok. They did require a lot of building up and still looked rather patchy. Surprisingly the purple shade did blend out nicely, but after blending you can’t even really tell that it’s purple. It just kind of turns muddy. The blue? You can’t even tell that’s it’s blue. I applied this shade on my lower lash line and you can’t even tell that it’s blue. That being said, I was still really happy with the look I created with this palette. I think it’s a really beautiful palette, but if you’re buying this just for the blue and purple shades, you might be disappointed.

Modern Metals Blush and Highlighter Palette
I think I was most excited about the Modern Metals Blush and Highlighter Palette. It contains 3 highlighters and 3 blushes. The highlighters were just as smooth and pigmented as the metallic shadows. The blushes were a little powdery and required a lot of building up to show in my swatches. However, I didn’t experience this issue when it came time to apply it. I did have to tap a lot of excess product off my brush, but it applied and blended beautifully. I was really surprised. I wasn’t expecting the blush to cooperate. The highlighters are fairly subtle, but once built up they give off a serious glow. I’m really digging this palette.

Modern Metals Liquid Matte Lipstick
The Modern Metals Liquid Matte Lipstick is described as a universally flattering terracotta nude. The applicator was pillowy soft. It applied nicely and evenly. It felt comfortable, but it could be a little drying at times. It’s a gorgeous shade on its own, but I absolutely love it paired with the gloss!

Modern Metals Liquid Gold Lip Gloss
They claim the Modern Metals Liquid Gold Lip Gloss is a non-sticky gloss that provides shine with a golden shimmer. They aren’t lying. It’s a beautiful gloss and I didn’t find it to be sticky. I’m really digging the applicator. It felt soft and made application quick and easy. This is a beautiful gloss and one that I would gladly wear on its own.

You can see a look I created with the e.l.f. Modern Metals Collection below. From the eyeshadow palette I’m wearing the 4th shade on my lid, the 6th and 7th shades in my crease, I used the 10th shade to deepen my crease, the 1st shade on my brow bone, the 2nd shade on the inner corner of my eye, and the 8th shade on my lower lash line. From the blush palette I’m wearing the 2nd blush and 1st higlighter. On my lips I layered the gloss on top of the liquid matte lipstick.

Overall, I’d have to say this collection was well thought out and nicely done. The packaging is really nice. Even the outer packaging. I don’t want to sound cheesy, but I think these would make great holiday gifts. The gold packaging is all the wrapping you’d need. Maybe stick them in a stocking or a nice gift bag. My only complaint is the eyeshadow palette. I really wish it performed better.

Have you heard of the Modern Metals Collection? What product stands out the most to you?

  1. This collection is so pretty! I’m really into the lip products; they are gorgeous! I was excited about the eyeshadow palette until I heard that the mattes are not so great.

  2. I can see from your swatches that the mattes are quite chalky and the pigmentation is not as good as the shimmer/metallic. Still a decent palette.
